Glendale mother of four waiting for a heart
transplant after suffering a heart attack of
unknown origin.

The support of the community, friends and
family was not enough to mend Maddux’s
Gamaged heart. Judy Maddux died A[...]ould
have saved her life.

Maddux had been living with a portable
Novacorheart since herheartattack anddouble
bypass surgery in January. Prior to the attack
Maddux was an active and healthy woman
and the proud mother of a two-week-old
daughter. The attack was believedto becaused
by postpartum cardiomyopathy, a rare disease
possibly caused by extra strain on t[...]Services Advisory Council in volunteer
activities to raise money to help defray the
Maddux family’s mounting medica[...]their communities.

“When you do programs like this and try to
help people, even when a tragedy occurs it
shouldn’t deter people from h[...]waiting fordonorhearts,
but adonor heart was hard to find because it is
difficult to match antibodies.

Maddux fought hard, but time took its toll.
She developed a total body infection and was
readmitted to the University Medical Center in
Tucson August 8.

“The infection was so severe that she was no
longer a transplant candidate,” Francisco
Arabia, a UMC cardiovascular and thoracic
surgeon, said in an interview with the Arizona

them, Democrats under age 30 attending this
weck’s convention are lining up behind
different concerns and that has made them a
difficult group for the party to target and

More than 250 of the 5,000 delegates are
under the age of 30, and 400 to 500 party
activists in that age range are expected to be
in Chicago

But the Democratic Party expects young
adults to play a much different role from the
one they did in 1968. when the Democrats
last came to town

Instead of behind a few
controversial issues and playing primary roles
in protests, these young adults will be active
in a low-key manner as they focus their
attention on i[...]ation parties and working as
volunteers.

“It's a completely different environment

“We had the war in 1968, and that was a
rallying point. You could touch it, you could

In a May survey conducted by Who Cares
Magazine and the Center for Policy
Alternatives, a nonpartisan group that
advocates political and ci[...]lts, 20 percent of the 1,200
participants ages 18 to 24 identified
themselves politically as independent.
Another 6 percent aligned themselves with
independent, leans Democrat and 7 percent
with independent, leans Republican.

This independent identity among young
adults is growin[...]e in the two
parties,” said Susan MacManus, 49, a political
science professor at the University of South
Florida and author of “Young V. Old,” a
book about generational differences in politics

the right to vote in 1972, the youth vote has
been a key factor in presidential campaigns.

voter. In the 1992 campaign, Bill Clinton
attracted youth with his saxophone playing
and appearances on MTV.

GCC expanding to meet student needs

to look forward to as GCC continues its commitment to
providing students with the best possible educaticn.

A 1994 bond proposal passed by voters granted GCC
a[...]over the next seven years.

The first projects in a series of construction and remodeling
projects are scheduled to begin in April 1997 and be completed
in time for the spring 1998 semester.

Campus buildings need attention to continue to be functional
in the future, said Joyce Elsner, d[...]sed for fall 1996 semester. Elsner said she hopes
a new look and improved course offerings will attract even
more students.

“We have to look at how we can restructure and make our
courses more accessible,” Elsner said. She added that the first
priority with any improvements is better serving the students.[...]ns include energy conservation projects,
upgrades to the athletic track and tennis courts and installa[...]ed.

The new 9,000-square-foot classroom building to be
completed in January 1988 will be located to the east of the
existing language arts (LA) building. It will contain nine
multiple discipline classrooms with specially equipped
geography and anthropology cla[...]The new faculty services building, also scheduled to be
ready for the spring 1988 semester, will be lo[...]air, said she thinks
faculty will be very pleased with the new offices. Each office
will be tailor-made to suit the occupant with built in fixtures
in one of four floor plans. The[...]administrative building.

“Teachers are excited about the new offices and are planning
to get in,” Hawks said.

She added that the architects working on the plans have
been very open to working with the college and keeping the
plans within budget.

“Our goal is to keep the aesthetic looks and character of the
campus,” she said.

In addition to 37 English and social science faculty offices,
the building will also be home to a new book store and copy
center.

“It would be nice to update the bookstore so people could

The new copy center will also be better able to meet

“Overall we've outgrown the current music building

Modifications will also be made to the liberal arts (LB)

discovered telltale signs of life on a meteorite from Mars,
other scientists came to Washington to press their case for
another— blander—explana[...]occurring chemical reactions.

“I don’t want to second-guess them,” said Ralph Harvey, a
planetary geologist at Case Western Reserve University at
Cleveland. “But I can’t explain their work and they can’t
explain mine.”

Harvey's group studieda sample from a meteorite, recovered
from Antarctica, that the sc[...]grees came from Mars. The NASA group also studied a
sample from the same rock, and early this month, said the
circumstantial evidence pointed to signs of early Martian life.

Both groups found tiny particles built with carbon inside the
meteorite.

Carbon is an essential elementto life as we know it on Earth,
and to NASA, the particles were a sign that life had at one time

into it.

“There was anatural systematic way to build these carbonates

Harvey, who plans to return to Antarctica in a few months

“When that paper came out, I was all ready to walk away

knowledge.”

NEW YORK (CPS)—Lots of college students brag that they go to the biggest
party school in the nation.

But this year, only Florida State University students can make that claim with
some authority.

Believe it or not, the Princeton Review, famous for its guidebooks, does
intensive research on such things as the students[...]ity of the Greek system on college campuses.

And this year, their vote for the biggest partiers in the nation goes to the
Seminoles.

“Classes are great, but this school is so much fun it’s sometimes hard to get
motivated,” one unnamed student told the Princeton Review.

The top 20 party schools are a mixed bag of big state schools, small privates,
religious colleges and even a few former single-sex colleges.

Record-breaking winds of up to 120 mph on August
14 downed power lines, uprooted[...]d many
roofs. -

Governor Fife Symington declared a state of
emergency in the communities of Peoria, Glendale,
Surprise and El Mirage to help recover from the
damage. Each community will receive $200,000 from
the state to pay for emergency workers overtime.

The storm blew down approximately 430 power poles
leaving about 280,000 households without power.
About two-thirds of the 250,000 Arizona Public Service[...]power outages when the

Sleeping your way t to good health

An acceleration of the aging process can also be causes by
a loss of sleep, because one of the major functions of sleep is
to allow chemicals within the body to repair cell damage and
ward off infectious diseases.

The best way to solve these problems is to go to bed and
wake up at the same time every night and[...]ychologist James Mass in Allure. For those
people with schedules incompatible with a least eight hours
of sleep every night, a nap of about 20 to 30 minutes can only
partially alleviate some of the symptoms of sleep depravation,
according to sleep researcher David Dinges.

“Can you live your life that way? No,” Dinges said.[...]out of three Americans has problems sleeping. For a
better night's sleep, keep these tips in mind:

¢ Develop a ritual for sleep. A regular routine before
bedtime, such as reading or taking a bath, becomes a cue to
relax.

* Keep regular hours. An erratic schedule makes it difficult
to fall asleep at night or wake up in the morning.[...]rve the bedroom
for sleep only; associate the bed with rest rather the stress of
work or classes.

* Don't use alcohol as a sedative. Alcohol interferes with
stages of deep sleep.

This year the staff of The Voice has decided to combine the Arts/Life
sections to make a bigger and better section. So we are turning to you the
students to come up with a name for the new section.

In the past, there has[...]the paper. How-
ever, in the Spring 1996 semester we witnessed a great increase in the
student’s voicing their thoughts with the Favorite Teacher Contest. So we
decided to let the students name the new section.

The Arts/Life section deals with arts stories as well as human interest
stories. We plan to include more movie and music reviews as well as

The Cure played to a screaming, delighted crowd at America West Arena on Aug. 18. Boys
and girls were all made up with makeup and high, hair-sprayed hair and skirts and[...]ng in the typical gothic fashion made popular way before all this hip vampire crap. It
felt like the 80's!

The stage was fashioned in an unusual way. But what more could one expect? A wrecked
roller coaster adorned the back of the stage, while a video display played in the background
with peculiar revolving pictures, and an ominous ceiling with parts undulating, as Salvatore
Caputo of the Ariz[...]d ominous from the fog
machines.

The Cure played a collaboration of old and new songs, with a lively mix of each that was
different than the al[...]t he surpassed all my expectations.
The songs had a freshness to them that only came from over a decade of experience. With tons
of Cure material to be covered, the anticipation over the ending of e[...]lt as
everyone held their breath in wonderment of what would he sing next. The “he” being, of[...]the only original band member of The Cure. Along with bassist Simon Gallup,
drummer Jason Cooper, guita[...]boardist Roger O’ Donnell, Smith
gave the crowd a treat all would remember.

The Cure came out for two encores, to an applauding crowd, bringing together an eclecti[...]surprising. The Cure is all I’ve been
listening to since the concert,” said Don Donaldson, student[...]rts. “I saw The Cure in San Diego in ‘92, but this tour was better because
I was closer and because there was no warm-up band. Robert Smith knew he had to do better
to make up for the money everyone had paid to just see one band. It was well worth the $30..
I paid him (Smith) $10 an hour to see him sing, and it was well worth it.”

They played new stuff from All Mixed Up, with old stuff intermixed such as “Charlotte
Sometimes”, “Let’s Go To Bed”, and “Killing An Arab.”

The conglomeration of songs gave old and new Cure fans a taste of what The Cure is about;
from the old catchy songs such as “Boys Don’t Cry”, to the sad, melancholy, songs such as
“Fascination Street”, to the happy-go-lucky songs like “Friday I’m in[...]were
felt by the fans that were there, listening to them sing, was enough to take the place of the

six years after a bus accident nearly left her paralyzed

One of the many hits on this CD includes the song “Reach,” which was used[...]nial Olympic Games. Gloria Estefan has maintained a high
quality of music to be enjoyed by all.

In arecent interview on the S[...]t album were common objects like saws,
chains and a tub filled with water. She said that she wanted her music to reflect the instruments
used by her African ancestors in her homeland of Cuba. Her CD Destiny should be a good pick
among your selections.

Trace Adkins, a country singer, released his CD titled Dreaming Out Loud. He has many
songs that my appeal to some people, but his monotonous voice and souther[...]his music that interesting. Read-along-songs tend to become boring and
tiresome, and considering this CD on your list would be insane.

On the other hand, we have country singer Mindy McCready with her CD Ten Thousand
Angels. McCready also has tha[...]ire CD has an upbeat twist, enticing the listener to the next selection. Over
all, it isn’t the best album, but it does represent the category of music properly.

Story[...]ing is moving beyond the stigma associated
solely with altermative communities, and has entered the
mainstream, reaching a wider variety of body modification
enthusiasts. Why, you ask? There are a lot of reasons.

“I tend to see body modification as a method of self
expression, of laying claim to my body as my own. The world
being as it is, there are few enough things I have control over,
this is one of them,” Cort explains in an on-line di[...]BodyArt Page.

Marcel McDaniel considers herself a typical “Generation
X-er,” and claims “it’s definitely popular, a lot of my friends
have them.” Part of that popularity is driven by the motivation
of ‘starting a new trend, trying to be different, changing who
you are,’ says McDan[...]enthas become
“more popular because it is known to be successful and people
are more curious,” adds Frederick.

“The younger clients tend to pierce the facial area, while the
older pierce body parts they can conceal because of their

and have everything written out for people,” says Ed. But with
all the excitement, some people are not always careful to

tongue. We don’t do hand or foot webbing, artillery or the[...]al piercing. Less popular piercing is the surface-to-
surface pierce. “It’s quite dangerous, a lot of people do it

Rion considers surface-to-surface piercing “acceptable if
done properly. I know what to look for. I use jewelry designed
by me for that purpose.”

Most of the piercings listed, while referred to as standard
piercings, can be considered newly created in the modern

Exotic piercing also popular to the modern piercing
movement has some historical, traditional ritual purposes.

to $90 for exotic piercing, including jewelry.

One[...]veral other options are available, but the metals to
avoid are silver, gold plated, brass, bronze and[...]propriate
for other body locations. Avoid jewelry with nicks, scratches,
and irregular surfaces to prevent damage to the tissue.

Thickness and diameteris another imp[...]thin will cut the skin. Jewelry that is too
thick can cause an abscess. Jewelry too large in diameter can

-Does it hurt? Yes, but significantly less than most people

-Can you numb the areas to be pierced? Only a topical

-Can I lose sensation in the pierced area? Most people
experience an increase in sensation.

The training time varies widely from 2 days to 2 weeks,
and, according to Rion, upto 2 1/2 years with HTC. Training
includes sterilization procedures a[...]HTC offers an apprenticeship program.

HTC begins with customer relations. The steps include
learming anatomy, dealing with the jewelry, observing a
master piercer and then piercing. Once apprentice[...]s determined by the master piercer, they
graduate to become piercologists.

Currently, no regulations[...]t form and the government
will not regulate that. We have repeatedly tried but they are
unwilling to. We tried massive petitions, even hired a
lobbyist,” says Rion.

“We police ourselves. And we follow the APP Health and
Safety guidelines,” c[...]ds of safety
and the quality of work done without a regulated industry. In
addition, they cited the d[...]itudes of some who feel
they have accomplished “a more exalted position.”

What separates a good piercer from a bad one is a question
Ed asked following a bad personal experience with piercing.
“It's difficult to know unless you have been trained,” he
adds.

This summer Hollywood has given movie
buffs a talking dragon with a large heart, an
alien invasion that catapults worldwide
independence, a modern day James Bond with
an impossible mission, a-string of strange
phenomenon that creates a super genius, and a
story of storm cha that has a lot of twists.

Here’s a glance back at some of the biggest
highlights the movie industry has had to offer
this summer.

“Dragonheart” - Director Rob Cohen
c[...]d and
the vocal talents of Sean Connery as Draco, this
was considered the only true fantasy film since
t[...]lm Effects.

Although Connery only lent his voice to the
film, Digital Domain used modern computer
effects to record Connery’s face while in the
recording st[...]so
well known for. Overall, “Dragonheart” was
a film sure toto the
message they'll find this one definitely worth
seeing. Rob Cohen's next dir[...]“Daylight.”

“Independence Day” - Once in a while a
film gets hyped up so much that on opening
weekend it’s almost impossible to get into a
theater anywhere. “ JD4” both does and does
not fit into this category. Pushing the opening
date up a day (July 2) , it was the only film of
this magnitude to be released mid-week.
Despite this strange move by 20th Century
Fox, “ID4” hada[...]lum, “Independence Day” was no
disappointment to what long awaited fans were
expecting. Written[...]Emmerich, the same duo who
brought “Stargate” to the screen,” ID4”
attempted to use the same elements of that
film...but just make them bigger. For example,
this film used more model work than any other
film in[...]troyed them
while filming. One obvious good point to
“Independence Day” was that this is one of the
few movies that pride’s itself on building each
scene to be bigger, better, louder and more
shocking than the previous one.

Sull though, references to Area 51 and alien
abductions didn’t add to the realism of the film.
It was a poor attempt at combining every aspect
of alien a[...]Devlin had intended.
Also, “Independence Day” does what almost
every other film does throughout the movie...has
bad puns. The beginning of the filmis weaved
together to make it as realistic as possible, but
towards the[...]ulous
comments that made it hard for the audience to
appreciate the intensity of what the film was
trying to bring across.

Director Roland Emmerich is signed on tothis summer, this gives audiences
a chance to see an alien movie...that isn’t an
alien movie.[...]elated, then gives the possibility it isn't. It's a
roller coaster of possibilities that leaves it up to
the audience to decide the cause of the incident.

John Travolta[...]ll (“The Paper’’) lead the starring cast in
a Jon Turtletaub film. Even though this movie
does explore an aspect of alien intelligence not
yetcovered, it seems to reflect too much on last
year’s “Powder.” This also makes a mistake
all too common in most good films, it tel[...]othing
new for the movie watcher once he/she goes to
see the movie itself.

“Mission Impossible” -[...]ginal
television series shouldn't be disappointed with
this accurate remake of the team of super spy’s
who, “should they choose to accept their
mission”, run into all sorts of tr[...]h the acting was exceptional,
producers attempted to tum it into more of asex
symbol film than the act[...]ended. Tom Cruise spends more
time walking around with a towel around his
waist than the actual movie spen[...]less “Mission
Impossible” or Cruise fans plan to go see this
movie twice, then don’t bother. More than 80
pe[...]plain boring. The remaining time
is spent trying to figure out who and who isn’t
the good guys or bad guys. Filled with a
dizzying loop of betrayals and alliances, it
might take one or two attempts at watching the
movie before figuring it out.

“Twister” - Director Jan de[...]liens”, “True Lies”) stars
alongside “Mad About You” star Helen Hunt
in what theatricalsteasers promised “would
blow you away”, =

Although there Was a certain degree of
unrealistic action, such as the two main stars
hiding under an old wooden bridge to escape
the intensity of a small tornado, it did have its
share of realistic[...]nd wind effects created for the film
(courtesy of a 747 engine) added nicely to the
realism and believability of the film.

Micha[...], the writer of the film, has
had his name pop up a lot lately. Recently
having completed “Congo”[...]oming project “Sphere”, Crichton
collaborated with producers to make it as real
as possible.

Although there are ahandful of scenes
that are a little hard to swallow, it is definitely
one of the films of the[...]sion of “King Kong”
tentatively scheduled for athis flick like all flicks has it’s fair share of evils. For
one thing the whole idea of the story is totally unbelievable . Secondly, it was very difficult
to understand, it took me awhile to figure out what was going on and why.

It starts with Douglas (David Thewlis), a lone survivor of a plane crash, floating in
a life raft in the Java Sea. A ship carrying the mysterious Montgomery (Val Kilmer) rescues
him and takes him to Moreau Island. Douglas is soon horrified when he[...]deep, dark secret.

Dr. Moreau (Marlon Brando) is a scientist gone mad by his obsession with creating
the perfect race of human beings by combining the genes of people with the genes of animals.
The result being freakish monsters who begin to question their “father” about their mutation.
It’s absolute chaos from this point on, complete with bloody fight scenes and hyenna-men
shooting machine guns. Weird, huh?

There are only two things that save this movie, Val Kilmer and the awesome make-
up effects of the animal people. Kilmer does a great job in his role as a drug addicted,
demented doctor, not to mention the fact that he looks good in the tropic[...]tah- men and wild
boar-women, I’m sure that’s what they would look like.

I can’t say this movie is either good or bad, the only thing I can say about it is
“WHOA!”

Tin Cup: Ato recently
come out of Hollywood. The casting for this film is of some of the highest caliber that I have
seen in a while.

Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy(Kevin Costner) plays a drunken golf pro ata driving range
in a small nowhere town in Texas. Roy ends up meeting[...]s from the “Pro”. Roy ends up falling
in love with the lady doctor and strives to do everything that he can to impress her.

David Simms(Don Johnson) is a PGA player who arrives at the driving range to
offer Roy a job in an upcoming tournament. David is a constant thorn in Roy’s side, as they
used to play golf together in college. It also ends up th[...]ed in the middle of the tournament and then plans to do everything that he
can to show up David.

Roy ends up getting help with his plan from his driving range parmer Romeo
Posa[...]or the US Open. He also enlists the help of Molly to be his “Shrink”, to get his
attitude in line for the Open.

The actin[...]developed
and the writers did an exceptional job with the script. The topper to this wonderful romantic-
comedy is that the ending is not predictable. So if you want a delightful change of pace, you
need to go see this movie.

Onthe morning of June 6 19961
was on my way to my auto shop when my
car overheated. A man riding his bike
stopped to help. After pushing my car off
the road and into a bank parking lot he
went home and got his pickup truck so he
could give me a ride to the repair shop
where a friend was waiting to give me a
ride to work. With plans to repair the car
himself and to leave the keys hidden in
the car so I could pick it up after work the
man called me to inform me that he could
not fix my car. He then advised me that
he would drive it to a nearby repair shop
and have it repaired.

Because[...]problems,
I had told the man I would not be able to
pay the bill until the next Saturday. He
advised me not to worry about the repair
bill as he had set out his day with the
intent of helping someone in need.
Though the repair shop did substantial
work on my car the man refused to let me
make payment arrangements with him.

I have since learned that the man who
was so kind and generous is Ted Corley a
teacher at Glendale Community College.

Why would the government seek to prohibit or restrict private firearm ownership (the
“keep”) or our right to carry them for our protection (the “bear”)?

The answer is a simple one because it is the same answer to most questions of
governmental actions, power.

The founders of the Constitution envisioned the Union as a constant struggle for power
between the people and the government.

Some of the founders, especially a group known as the Federalists led by Alexander
H[...], felt that the rights of the people did not need to be spelled
out.

Most of the population, however, disagreed.

This led to the drafting of the Bill of Rights, alist of spec[...]ent
could not do. If, for the sake of discussion, we can assume that the amendments were
listed in descending order of importance, we can then get a picture of those issues that
were important to the citizens of the day.

The First Amendment, of course, protected free speech. This meant specifically, but
not limited to, political disagreement.

The government should n[...]erful that the average citizen could not
disagree with its policies. No American would ever need to be afraid to say that the
emperor had no clothes.

The people[...]at the next issue of importance was their ability to protect
themselves, presumably right after exercising their free speech.

This was a complex issue for the time, because the actions of England towards her
colonies had given the colonists a strong dislike for the governmental power of asta[...]e responsibility, even the right of each citizen,
to care for himself and his family, rather than rely upon some distant and impersonal
agency to “get around” to helping them in need.

They understood what Teddy Roosevelt would later describe as “...speak softly but
carry a big stick.” Each citizen, under the Second Amendment, would be strong in a
hostile world, ready to defend himself against an aggressor. He refused to be a victim,
would not even consider denying himself the tools required by the current technology
to feel secure, not in someone else but in himself.

Does this idea apply today? Even more so, some people would[...]anity by the year 1782, native Americans and all. A single major city
in America today, such as L.A. or New York, would have killed off the crew and
passengers of the Mayflower in about six weeks.

Americans are under assault now, more than ever before. Why is this? I believe that
there are two reasons for this epidemic of violence.

The first, and to a majority of us, the most obvious reason for thiswith the severity that they deserve. Early release for[...]cked for the criminal and against the victim, and a national press that
promotes the theory that evil people are only a victim of society, all stand in the way
of just p[...]that is that the American public of today is not a threat to the safety of the criminal.

Anyone contemplating a crime will take the risks involved in that crime into account
before deciding upon a course of action.

The anti-gun sentiments of tod[...]tims will not
be armed. Do anything that you want to them.” We are in the process of turning our
population into a flock of sheep, all lining up to expose our throats to the wolf.

Would this be the case if all of our citizens were armed? Of[...]criminal
would understand that he would be faced with a potential firefight in the commission
of each and[...]unately, not all of our citizens would be willing to carry a gun, nor should they
be required to if it is against their beliefs.

The obvious alternative to this is to allow the citizenry to carry concealed weapons.
In this situation, the criminal never knows who will be armed, so he must always
consider it as the case. In this respect, a concealed carry law is better than an open carry,
because even the citizens that do not carry a gun get the benefit of the doubt.

The effects of this were demonstrated in a recent poll commissioned by the

The “Lady Gauchos” put on a magnificent

Nobley appeared to have a smooth rhythm of
the players going. As things came to a close
on the first game, the “Lady Gauchos” sailed
to a 15-10 victory

the experience of the veteran players proved
to be too much for the “Lady Gauchos.” The
alumni team pushed the “Lady Gauchos”
through a hard game. Both teams were play-
ing with all that they had, keeping close to
each other in points. But the game didn’t
concl[...]m wins by at least 2 points. The alumni
team made a fervor of plays to finally reach a
victory with a score of 18-16 over the “Lady
Gauchos.”

Joe Kersting is optimistic about the Glendale Com-
munity College football team’[...]nd the Wester States Football League
Championship this season.

With the highest number of returning starters during
the head coach’s tenure, a strong class of incoming
freshmen and a number eight national ranking in the
preseason, he has every right to be optimistic.

The Gauchos return 11 starters fr[...]he starting quarterback.

“(He) has really come to the forefrontat quarterback,
which was really a big question mark coming into this
season,” Kersting said. “He’s really done a nice job
this summer.”

Sophomore running back Anthony Di leso will give
O'Hare some help in the backfield this season. Di leso
was first-team All-Conference run[...]ry and scored 15
touchdowns last year. Di Ieso is a Preseason All-
American this season.

“Anthony Di Ieso is probably the leade[...]am,” Kersting said. “He’s acomplete player,
does everything you ask him to.”

The defense, which returns four starters, wi[...]our defense, com-
ing back,” Kersting said. “We're gonna have a lot of
first year players, playing on our defense.” One of
those freshmen is Dane Sorenson, a linebacker out of
Deer Valley. According to Kersting, Sorenson “has
been playing real well.”

Kersting feels this team can win both the ACCAC
and the WSFL championships.

“T think we got a good chance of winning either of
those, or both of them,” Kersting said. “If we stay

healthy in the right places we could be a very impressive football team.”

election drive.

Nine members were voted in as ESG board
members, with two board member possibilities
still pending.

“There were a little over 50 votes counted,”
said Moehling.

This lack of voting oncampus should disturb
most of th[...]ESG officers
and candidate board members made up a
whopping 25% of the students who voted.

“We just vote each other in and get going,”
ESG boa[...]nd public relations
person Christie Munson said.

This is literally what happens.

Elections are held during fall semester for
ESG board member positions only. This does
not include the officers.

It is a circular method of voting for each
other with some student body thrown in for
good measure. The[...]ho the candidates
are, some don’t have the time to vote, some
don’t know about it because they are on
campus for one class a week,” said Munson.

during t[...]tanding, eight semesters and counting.
When asked to account for his longevity,
Gonzales’s answer is[...]ent body should be informed.

ESG has the ability to do many things for
the evening students. This includes varied
things like art exhibits, legal a[...]that
they say is now completed but doesn't appear
to be so by those students who drive past it
every day.

This semester the ESG‘s focus continues to
be the same with their support of events like
the schedule of evening music programs, to
be held at the amphitheater, starting Oct. 5.

ESG is also very politically involved; A
necessity in this day of shrinking college

Club Fair!

What is a club fair?

This semi-annual event was held Sept. 18,
from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the student union

The purpose of this fair is to introduce all of
the clubs to the students and to familiarize
everyone with each club's responsibilities,
action, how to join, and finally their meeting
days.

This day is also to help the students get to
know what clubs there are to join at Glendale
Community College

With over 15 clubs taking part in this
semester's fair, the following are a sampling
of what clubs are offered at GCC and a little
bit about them.

International Student Association

This club is here for those individuals
interesting in getting to know other people
from different backgrounds, cultures and
countries and maybe even making a new
friend.

This club is designed to provide a friendly

Election-time decisions:

As we enter the election season, there has been a
considerable amount of press devoted to the two major
candidates and the various aspects of their respective
campaigns, with much of the focus upon the Dole
campaign upon his[...]ficit in the polls. I
believe that the reason for this deficit can be found in a
brief look at some of the basic motives and value[...]the American voter, neither
campaign has stood up to say “This is my way and here
is how it is different from my opponents way.” Almost
all of us would agree that this is what we would want the
campaign to be, and our political environment would be
much better if it were the case. What both of the
candidates have adopted as their strategy can only be
described as the emotional appeal, wherei[...]is towards the feelings of the voter. In
effect, what the candidates have said is “I'm a really
great guy and I make you feel good. My opponent is
pond scum. Now go be a good drone and vote for me.”
Itisalmostas if they realized that the voting public is not
educated enough to understand the issues involved, and
unfortunately I must agree. The best example of this is
the almost perverse refusal of the electorate to educate

themselves on the realities of the tax c[...]d opposed by Mr. Clinton. Most voters do
not have a clue about the long or even the short term
repercussions of a tax cut on the economy, and don’t
even seem to care.

Sadly for Mr. Dole, he has chosen to appeal to less
powerful emotions than has Mr. Clinton, and this is the
basis for my prediction of a Dole loss.

Public spirit, a favorite of political strategists, is one
of the[...]de theme.
When speaking on education, he stresses a parents"
pride in a childs success. If the topic is crime, he will
focus on the model community. Rarely does he talk of
poor individuals when discussing poverty, instead he
will talk about a government that stifles the community
economy. All of these viewpoints are designed to get
the voter to think of himself as part of the community,
and to try to use our pride in our “territory” to support
his ideas.

In sharp contrast to this is the use of our sense of
competition by the Clinton campaign. In virtually all
Clinton speeches there is a good guy (himself or the
voter) and a bad guy (almost always Dole, Newt
Gingrich, or th[...]r).

Unlike Dole, the Clinton tactic is very easy to spot,
especially since he uses it in nearly every[...]haps the mostrecent,and longestrunning
example of this is the Medicare debate. In this scenano,
Clinton sets himself up as the only pers[...]every senior in
America slarving in the streets. This is an extremely
effective tactic, because we Americans are conditioned
to look at everything as a win loss proposition.

The second major focus of the Dole campaign is his
appealtooursenseof duty. This has beenusedextensively
in pushing his sides of t[...]In these points, Dole argues that it is
our duty to balance the budget and Medicare accounts
because we haveaduty to the pastand future generations.
Unfortunately, Americans hate tobe told whattodo,and
this is exactly what is happening here. Although the
Dole line[...]ame ongovernment,
it still has an accusatory ring to many people.

The Clinton campaign, in contrast, is using the angle
of self interest to great advantage here. Clinton, in his
recent train tour en route to the Democratic convention,
has promised a new federal program at nearly every

musical diplomacy will be a model for

Apple Hill group during a tour earlier this
year to the Middle East and Eastern

while the Apple Hill players were on tour

an Israeli and a Jordanian performed

This sense of cooperation, without
thought to political borders or religious
differences, thrives in the workshops in
New Hampshire. Cecil is a 21-year-old
pianist from Israel, and also a staff
member. She was one of the first
scholarshi[...]translating for them.
Stumacher says she is also a terrific cook,
and helps other students feel more at
home by making Middle Eastern dishes.

Cecil's dream is to developa method of
teaching piano to Arab students using
traditional Arabic tunes and[...]er enjoyed playing the
bassoon as much as she has this summer.
Because of the intense competitive nature[...]I am fitting
in.”

She has played chamber music before
coming to Apple Hill. She was part of a
wind quartet in Israel, but the group broke
up wh[...]went into the
army.

Although she admits that she can’ treally
say “ I’ve seen the United States,” she
says she likes what she has seen and loves
the prospect of being able to achieve
anything one wants.

As far as maintaining her friendship
with the pianist from Jordan once she
goes home, “ maybe in five years we will
be able to see each other, when the borders
are easier to cross.”

But for right now, in New Hampshire,
at Apple Hill Farm, things are just fine.
“ Tjust can’t seem to get this smile off of
my face,” she says with obvious delight.

GCC’s dance department finds a treasure in

new instructor JoAnn Yeoman

Angel V[...]er JoAnn Yeoman has brought her
qualified talents to the dance department at GCC to be anew
dance instructor.

Yeoman decided to come here to teach two beginning
jazz classes and a beginning ballet class when ,Lenna
DeMarco, also a GCC dance instructor invited her to come
to the dance department. She feels that with her experience
and expertise in the world of performance she can give her
students “more than what they thought they had” in their
dance cl[...]n because it is her union, or performing name.
“To make it easy, my students just call me JoAnn,”[...]cing at age four, when her mother
enrolled her in a ballet class. “At that time all mothers put
their little girls in dance, to teach them poise, give them
rhythm, and to help them to not be clumsy,” Yeoman said.

As the other litt[...]s, Yeoman’s interest blossomed. Her parents
had to find serious teachers who would train their daugh[...]orming at age ten and at 15 she made the decision to
explore all styles of performing, including other[...]tion.

Richard Traill brings his
unique creations to GCC

“My greatest[...]s unique and
spontaneous,” says Richard
Traill, a raku ceramist whose
exhibit opened at GCC on
Mond[...]gh Friday, Sept. 27.

The exhibit, which displays
about 30 pieces of ceramics, is
the first show put on by GCC
this year and is sponsored by
the Evening Student
Government

Raku ceramics has a very
different look from regular
ceramic pieces.[...]n expected result,
however, raku ceramics
produce a very unexpected,
spontaneous result. Traill

stresses that he never knows
what the piece will look like
until it’s completely finished.

Making a raku ceramic piece
is a long process, often taking
up to three months, due to the
extensive drying process.

Traill’s favorite part of raku
is puiting the design on the
piece. In order to do this, he
tapes the design on the ceramic
piece beforehand, and trims it
with a razor blade. When the
piece is done, the design is very
vivid, with swirling colors
surrounding il.

Traill was not a[...]the 1960's,
Traill “moved over into
woodworking to build an
airplane.” Finally, in 1986,
Traill fo[...]est in raku
ceramics.

“It wasn't until I moved to
Phoenix that I got into pottery,”

Traill comments.

Raku is a hobby for Traill.
“It (raku) is very relaxing when
you're doing it as a hobby.”

According to a press release
dated Sept. 16, Traill’s full-
ti[...]ew ideas for
some of his pottery.

Traill has had a great deal of
pottery instruction as well. He
has[...]Traill’s biggest inspirations is
Robin Hopper, a Canadian
potter. “I like his philosophy
and style,” Traill remarks.

Traill is very excited about
having his artwork at GCC.
“This is really
nice...professional,” Traill
begins,[...]lene Goto, the GCC Art
Curator, is also impressed with
Traill’s exhibit. “It (the show)
is beautiful[...]he show,
since it’s the first show of the
year

Does Traill have a favorite
piece? The answer is yes. A
piece titled, “Key of Life™ is
his favorite.

And, what exactly is the style
of Traill’s work? “It's me,”
Traill says with a smile.

Yeoman and a friend went on an audition for a dinner
theater in Anaheim, Calif. “We had to ask our hotel for an
ironing board and iron so ou[...]ice. I did
the ironing for both of us, and burned a whole in my friends
shirt. We didn’t get the job, and it was my fault because[...]hool and the University of London

She has worked with such people as Michael Bennet ,
Rob Reiner, Larry[...]nes, in “J Do, | Do!”, Fred, in “Once Upon A
Mattress”, Rosie, in “Bye Bye, Birdie”, Luc[...]and Adelaide, in “Guys And Dolls.”

She loves to perform and has a great appreciation for a
live audience

“L really feel that the film gen[...]lationship between you and the (live) audience is what I
like best about doing performances. You can communicate
and express yourself in abstract ways,” Yeoman said

In addition to being a highly seasoned performer, Yeoman
is also a published writer. She focuses mainly on non-
fiction, and some of her work can be seen in NYC’s Playbill
and the National Dram[...]by the Maricopa
Community Colleges, the series is a venue for excellence in
education and provides enhanced learning opportunities.
Speakers are commissioned to address a specific theme that is

Loretta Damon, a counselor here on the GCC campus, has
started a new program for Native American students called
the Native American Student Association (NASA), A.K.A.,
the “Indian Club”.

Damon, along with her assistant Clarence Reid, are
attempting to formulate the first Native American club on
campu[...]ottsdale
Communty College for 13 years, she plans to facilitate
activities while following college gui[...]ation is that “Maricopa County is in great
need to serve and assist Native Americans on college
camp[...]sist
in enhancing her skills in inanagerial work

A meeting was held on Sept. 10 in an attempt to get all
Native American students on the campus to[...]rived for the
first meeting. The meeting was held to discuss the start of
The Native American Club in which a speaker from SCC
spoke on developing positive stu[...]s. The
continuing meetings, tentatively scheduled to be held on
Tuesday's at 2 p.m., will be conducted in hopes that the
numbers continue to increase. Both Damon and Reid plan to
continue calling students and encourage those who have
already attended to invite others to come back with them.

The meeting held on Sept. 17 was put tog: to select
officers and get-students ideas and opinions on Native
American Week. Reid plans to set up a table in the Student
Union and assist with information pertaining to Native
American Day held on the 27th of this month.

“A lot of students don’t know anything about Native
Americans except for what they’ ve seen on television,” said
Reid, “this club gives them a chance to see other Native
Americans and speak with them.” Reid, who is a forty hour
a week assistant to Damon, plans to follow up the initial
meetings by making flyers, recruiting students and letting
them know about the club. Both Damon and Reid are
available to help students in activities both on and off
campu[...]t held at the Phoenix Civic Plaza. They also plan to
have Indian Fry Bread, Navajo tacos and various a[...]ely, Damon and Reid have high hopes of conducting
a Pow-Wow. According to Damon, “Pow-Wows” are social
gatherings usual[...]dancing.

Damon’s other work has included going to high schools
around the valley and recruiting students to attend GCC. She
is active in a program called “Ace Plus” that assists high
s[...]ollege credits.

Damon, who is only available for a six month short term,
plans to get the proverbial ball rolling and let the stude[...]booths, raising
their own funds, getting nvolved with the electronic forum
and coming out with their own newsletter.

Damon says she has always[...]“education by
observation and participation”, a method she intends to
impress upon other students on campus.

“Sometimes we're asked what people think about us,”
said Reid, “this club gives them a chance to see. The best
place to find out about Indian writings and the drawings on
the wall you always hear about is at this club. N.A.S.A. also
gives students a chance to see differences from other tribes...
how they talk and think.”

According to Damon their are 450 tribes across the United
States of which 21 make up Arizona. She wishes to reach as
many of the youth as she can while teaching them of their
own background and the backgrounds of others.

lege.

It would be a long night for Hekeai,
as GCC defeated Eastern Co[...]regular season. The Lady Gau-
chos just came off a two game road
trip against Pima Community Col-
le[...]layed in the Yavapai Tour-
nament where they lost to Dixie and
Long Beach college. Prior to this
GCC defeated five other teams in
the tournament coming out with a 5-
2 record.

The first match of the game against
Eastern, GCC scored first. Eastern
soon came back with a two point
rally against GCC.

Eastern would take the first time-
out in the game with GCC ahead 3-
2

After the time-out, Eastern attack
GCC with some powerful hits, but
were blocked by Shawna Vanley.
Vanley would have a great game
with 11 kills, 5 blocks, and 1 ace.

The score was 6-2[...]ed at the net.

Audra Littou made the ball scream
to Eastern Side like a bolt of light-
ning. She would get 8 kills and 9[...]it across Eastern’s defense

Eastern would make a rally
comeback against GCC, which the
score was 6[...]lays in hitting and blocks.
Jandreau-Clifford had a great of-
fensive and defensive game with
6 kills and 1 ace.

Both Eastern and GCC dug out
their weapons to make points on
each other.

With Johnson big blocks and
Vanley hitting the ball ha[...]would win the match

“In the first match we wanted to
size each other up,” Nobley said.
Eastern being a tall team didn’”t
stop Johnson to get 3 kills and 7
blocks.

In the start of the second match
Eastern took a two point lead

against GCC. Eastern would make
mistakes early in the match to help
GCC take the lead 3-2 as Eastern

Visibility[...]lege District, club visibility
still remains just a goal instead of a reality,
according to this semester's president.

LGBAU president Nick Shepa[...]ts for
approximately four years, the club has yet
to break the low-profile mold it seems to
have settled in to.

“While a lot of people might be somewhat
aware that GCC ha[...]their sexual
orientation, really have no idea who we
are,” Shepard said.

According to Shepard, GCC’s semi-
annual Club Fair, which is held each
semester, seemed to provide a good starting
point for this semesters LGBAU to make
an initial first step to increase campus
awareness about the club.

“Except for a very minor occurrence of
three students who were hostile to our being

College Safety Report], all of[...]b Fair and who stopped by
our table either showed a simple curiosity
about the LGBAU, or at worst were no

more than just indifferent to our presence.”

surrounding a persons sexual orientation

“The main problem we have with society
is that there is so much ignorance that there
really is a large segment that thinks a
person woke up one day andchose their
sexual orie[...],
gay, or bi-sexual,” Dawson said.

In addition to GCC, Phoenix College,
Scottsdale and Mesa Communi[...]ay, lesbian and bi-sexual student
organizations.

This is Shepard's fifth semester as a
student at GCC and his first semester as a
member of the LGBAU.

“I was aware that the club existed, but it
was not until this semester that, along with
some friends, I attended my first meeting,”
he said.

With anew school year under way the
Phi Theta Kappa at Glendale Community
College is anxious to make a positive
difference on campus and in the West
valley.

“We're reai oriented towards the
community and we are going to be doing
alot of things to help the community oul,
but our concentration is going to be
AIDS,” said PTK president Bridget
Gonzalez.[...]nternational honor society
for two-year colleges. To start the club
will take part in AIDS Project Arizona's
Ninth Annual AIDS Walk Arizona.

This 5k fundraising walk-a-thon will
be held on Oct. 20 and start at Patriot[...]nt and something that
Gonzalez feels is important to take part
in.

“It benefits the 16 AIDS foundat[...]aid.

“Tam the Team leader for GCC. I am
trying to get with MECHA, student
government, LGBAU and the Student
Honors Organization. I’ve recruited them
to help us out.”

Gonzalez said that the club will[...]nsorship from students,
faculty and staff and one can pledge
whatever they wish.

“They would like you to pledge by the
kilometer because it’s a 5k walk, but if
you want to pledge a dollar, then come
pledge a dollar,” added Gonzalez

All students are encouraged to take
part in the AIDS walk and school vans
have been reserved to transport people to
the event.

marathon later this month and will be
involved in street clean-up under the City
of Glendale Adopt-a-Street program

PTK will also be involved with the
PAWS program which helps those
individuals with AIDS who are pet

GPA and have accumulated a minimum
of 12 credit hours at GCC.

the type of club that will
motivate those students into

that people who are not yet

CHICAGO—Tamara Hahn doesn’t have
time to sleep.

Hahn, a 20-year-old juniorat the University
of Illinois at Chicago, juggles a full classload,
softball practice and a part-time job at a
sandwich shop

“During the [softball] season, Iget no sleep,”
says Hahn, as she spreads mustard on a roast
beef sandwich. “It’s hard to go to classes
sometime. It’s hard to pay attention.”

Weekends are a time to catch up on sleep,
she says, although sometimes “I try to make
up my sleep right after practice, but that’s
when I have to do work or study.”

“It’s really hard,” s[...]d more time feeling tired and listless,
according to recent studies.

The report compared the results of a mental
health survey of 1,200 healthy adults living in
the Midwest in the 1930s to those of 1,200
adults of comparable age, gender,[...]dence and other factors 50 years later.

There is a surge in the number of people
who report being fa[...]college
students, in particular, are more likely to
suffer from sleep deprivation than their male
cou[...]nt) and men (58 percent)
said they required seven to eight hours of

sleep each night.

Sixty-percent of the men reported getting
in seven to eight hours of snoozing. But only
38 percent of the women students said they
got that much sleep, and slightly more than
half (SI[...]than did men
in the study. During the week, while about
half of the menand women in the sample went
to bed by 11 p.m., more than 20 percent of
men reported staying up past midnight as
compared to only | percent of the women.

Buton weekends, the tables turn. About 40
percent of the men were in bed by midnight
and 80 percent by 3 a.m. Only 20 percent of
the women students were in bed by | a.m., and
60 percent by 3 a.m.

Women also were less likely than men to
take a nap to make up the difference and more
likely to be up on weekdays by 8 a.m. than are
men.

Many women said they try to catch up on
their sleep on weekends. Nearly 40 percent of
women reported not rising by 10 a.m. on
Saturdays and Sundays, while only 26 percent
of men slept beyond 10 a.m. on weekends.

“Napping and sleeping-in on we[...]re complex. While
the body craves sleep, the urge to sleep must
be ignored to maintain a healthy, synchronized
sleep cycle.”

Sexton-Radek says one of the most
important habits for a good sleep cycle is to go
to bed and get up at about the same time each
day

is concerned about nutrition.

However, she’s also concerned about
school, her job, and keeping up with
her family and social life.

How does she balance all of these
activities?

soda pop.”

This scenario may not surprise most
busy students, such as Lewis. Due to
the hectic lifestyle of a student,
nutrition is sometimes the last thing
students think about.

“(Students) don’t eat as badly as they

Daugherty emphasizes that students
need to worry about their health in the
present, because their bodies will
change as they get older in the future.

If a person chooses to eat a great deal
of unhealthy foods while they are

and not later.

“It's easy for students to say, I don’t

Hopefully, it is a lack of oversight instead of a “who
cares” attitude that has allowed prices at Glendale
Community College’s Restaura to make it a virtual
impossibility for students to purchase a quality meal on
campus.

For the reasonable perso[...]g of their students
into account when they decide what on-campus eating
alternatives they will allow students to have.

In a report on nutrition which appears in this issue of

The Voice reporter April Kupper distributed a survey
designed to gauge students eating habits for them to
complete last week. In a cross-section of the comments
she received, one thing was consistent: Restaura charges
too much for students to get a healthy, well-balanced
meal.

In “ Restaura,” a calzone sells for $2. However, if
someone wants p[...], it is an additional 45 cents.
Isn't pizza sauce to a calzone the same as a bun to a hot-
dog? While a typical head of lettuce at the grocery store
usually sells for less than a dollar, (retail, not wholesale),
customers at Res[...]n average, between $3
and $4 fora salad. Granted, this price does include a small
amount of salad dressing and maybe a few other small

items such as a cherry tomato, croutons, etc. However,

the same size salad at McDonald’s is only in the $1 to $2
range, complete with dressing.

Even more shocking by comparison, at Wendy’s, a
person can purchase an “all-you-can-eat” trip to the salad
bar for approximately $2.99. At Restaur[...]Restaura’s combination
meals from the grill are a little closer to being competitive
with off-campus eateries. However, a regular size
cheeseburger costs $1 at Restaura. The same size
cheeseburger costs 69 cents at McDonald’s. A quarter-
pound hamburger on campus costs approximately $1.40.

A quarter-pound char-broiled whopper at Burger King
still costs only 99 cents.

Another thing which seems to “pour salt in the wound,”
(and youcan be sure Restaura’ s customers will pay for that,
too), is a persistent lack of quality and consistency. Servi[...]oping the food is on duty and whether or not itis a peak
meal time. The problem here is not just the size of the
portions in relation to the price they cost. The problem is
that all of t[...]so that at least Restaura’s customers will
know what they are paying for.

Perhaps those GCC an[...]president (Teddy, that is) believe that it is not a big
issue because students have an option of leav[...]n affordable meal.

Perhaps they have not thought about the many GCC
students who do not have a car.

Perhaps they have not thought about the students whose
class schedules do not give all of them enough time to walk
to their cars, drive to a more economical place to eat, then
return in time for their next class.

Perhaps they need to put the needs of their financially
challenged students first.

Perhaps they just need to think.

Hockey g[...]Something that would promote Phoenix's image as a “big city.”

But, unfortunately once people get what they want, the issue is
so ofien forgotten.

This has been the case with National Hockey League (NHL)
hockey in the Valley? Where did all the excitement about our
NHL expansion team, the Phoenix Coyotes, go over the summer?

After moving to Phoenix from a city where the main spectator
sport is hockey, I[...]sed having people
who loved hockey as much as Ido to
chat with.

When it became final last spring
that the Winnipeg Jets hockey team
was moving to Phoenix I was thrilled
at the thought of once again being
able to experience hockey from the
home of an NHL team.[...]the summer when it is
the league’s off season, this lack of
coverage continued into one of the
bigges[...]sports- writers. Held only onceevery
four years, this event brings together
the world’s finest hockey[...]es.

Notonly did Team USA play well, they made it to the finals and
brought home the prestigious World Cup trophy. This is quite an
accomplishment.

If this is news to you, I expect you are not alone.

To my great dismay I had to miss the final game in the series and
was left in suspense overnight to find out if Team USA had won
this world renowned competition. The next morning I went
rushing out to buy acopy of The Arizona Republic only to find that
Team USA’s victory in this prestigious series was not even
mentioned.

No, I[...]no hockey coverage on the news or in the
papers.

this disappointing situation. He was informed that the reason the
paper had not devoted space to hockey news was that so few people
in the Valley[...]Where are all the people who were so interested a few months
ago?

When I finally got my hands on an NHL schedule for the
upcoming seas[...]ainst my old
home team, the Edmonton Oilers. Sure this was a good omen for the
upcoming season, I happily laid out $26.50 to view the game seated
amongst the rafters at Ameri[...]ted
off my Oilers team jersey and proudly
wore it to the game. I was prepared
for the good-hearted ribbing |
expected to receive as a result of
wearing the rival team’s jersey.

or T-shirts, gave me dirty looks and
refused to meet my eyes.

Where is the NHL spirit?

Although strong loyalties often
lie with the home team, part of the
fun of attending a game is in the
sportsman-like rivalry between fan[...]isgust at their new home team. Although
certainly a disappointing loss, it should by no means predict doom
for the entire season.

A lot goes into moving a team, and overall the transition has so
far been a smooth one. In fact, Pro Hockey magazine predicts the
Coyotes will finish third in their division this season. Since the Jets
were a strong team last season, this prediction does not seem
surprising or unreasonable to me.

We have something special in the Valley this fall. The more than
14,000 fans who attended the Coyote’s first home ice game already
know this. I plan to cheer our Coyotes on at as many of the 41
scheduled regular season home games as I can this year.

Maybe you'll catch some of the NHL spirit I am starting to feel
in the air and join me!

Sexual addiction: A serious threat to society

Sex has degenerated from an intimate
act that two people use to express love
towards one another to a frequent act that
a person does just to get a sexual
satisfaction.

People are beginning to abuse sex and
the results of abuse can be devastating
and dangerous. These results range from
contracting a sexually transmitted
disease, (STD), and spreading it to loved
ones, to the tragedy of molestation and
arrest. In this age of AIDS and other
sexually transmitted diseas[...]is
compulsive sexual behavior, sometimes
referred to as sexual addiction, that has
more to do with emotional problems than
it has to do with hormones and physical
needs.

The main problem is that sexual
addiction leads to AIDS. In a recent

survey conducted by Patrick Carnes, a sex
addiction therapist, 38 percent of men and
45 percent of women admitted they
contracted diseases as a part of their addictive
behavior. Many of the peo[...]rstand how dangerous and serious
sexual addiction can be. Society either
jokes about it or labels it as a hobby of
perverts or child molesters. In actualit[...]such as doctors,
lawyers or teachers, suffer from this
addiction. The addiction causes various
problems[...]onal embarrassment.
Men and women who suffer from this

addiction often have emotional problems

they view themselves. Both men and women
seek a sense of personal power and self-
worth, as well as an escape from pain and
loneliness, and use sex as a way to feel in
control and grab a momentary high. For
men, sex gives them self-esteem and a need
of independence. For women, sex gives
them a feeling of love, self-esteem and
companionship.

Sex addiction is a way that some men and
women use to suppress or medicate their
painful feelings or emotions and cope with
their stresses in everyday life. Addicts act
out to a degree that their sexual behavior
becomes their m[...]stress. Aftera while the addict becomes
addicted to the pleasure and the high sex
gives them and want[...]time.

In time the addiction has not only begun

to destroy the lives of the addict but also
their fr[...]elf-esteem and emotional and public
embarrassment to some and suicide and
death from AIDS to others. The addict
must learn to deal with their emotions
and face their problems in order to heal
themselves and move on with their lives

Sex is a part of everyday life and the
normal human existence, so abusers must
learn to deal with it in healthy ways
instead of self-destructive ways. By
learning to treat it through therapy, and
yes their is a sex addicts anonymous,
addicts can learn to help themselves and
others by finding more healthy ways of
dealing with their emotional problems.

The story unfolds to show that Ben rescues Tracy while she is in the midst of
drowning herself in the ocean. Tracy refuses to admit her suicide attempt by
explaining to her would-be savior that she was only “dancing.” Ben agrees to let
Tracy spend the night and she stays two month[...]er
and eventually Tracy becomes pregnant, but due to her insecurities she contemplates
abortion. This enrages Ben and he threatens to break off the relationship.

What will happen to the lovers? To find out attend a performance of Seascape for
Sharks and Dancer. D.[...]will both be adjudicated for an Irene Ryan award. A unique
quality to the show is that there are only two actors in the[...]show.
The show is directed by Randy Messersmith, a visiting director. Messersmith has
worked with the Southwest Shakespeare Company and directed Al[...]s Well at Scottsdale Community College which went to the regional college
theatre festival last year.[...]d run through October 19, all at 8:00 PM. Tickets can
be purchased at the box office , $5.00 to general public and $4.00 to students, staff,
and faculty that show proper ide[...]. The box office is open Monday through
Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. to reserve or purchase tickets call 435-3713.

The show runs about one and a half hours and there is no intermission.

Seating is limited to a first come first serve basis and there are only about 50 seats

No ‘moshing’: 311 best
in ‘That Damn Show’

Note to the readers of this article: I'm going to put major emphasis on the word
‘trendy’ which is defined as anyone who listens to The Edge.

Okay, “That Damn Show,” which was promoted by The Edge (106.3 F.[...]for all of you trendy kids, you know who you are, to go
to Zia’s and trade in all of the 311 CD’s you bought. Once you've done that, you
can buy back your Alanis Morisette CD's and forget you ever knew that 311 was a
band.

I may seem a little bitter about how popular 311 has gotten in the last few months,
but I have a good reason. Not only was their show at the Party Gardens over a year
ago, better, but it was for the real fans of[...]nger ruled the afternoon. Goldfinger, which
plays a Cali-punk ska-tinged skater boy sound, first rock[...].
And just like the aforementioned 311 show, only a few hundred people were there.
Then The Edge decided they wanted to be cool and began to play their most radio
friendly of their tunes, “ Bedroom.” Goldfinger tried to play the crowd by calling
the drummer the next Barbra Streisand, but these trendy kids just don’t know what
makes a good show.

As for the Butthole Surfers, well, it[...]ed group The Phunk Junkeez. The Junkeez, who play
a fast paced rap sound with some punk, played a July 4th show almosttwo years ago
where two hundred people showed up to enjoy one of Phoenix’s best. Now, after Co-
Fou[...]Fans yelled for Reznik and I personally received a middle finger
salute from Valentine. My best gues[...]ge and trendy kids everywhere,
I admit I was glad to see 311 again and watch them play the best set of[...]ut them in their place by dedicating
“Lucky,” a track from their 1994 Grassroots release, to the hardcore 311 fans.
While drummer Chad Sexton,[...]t, Guitarist Tim Mahoney, Singer/
Turntable man S.A. Martinez, and lead singer Nick Hexum rocked Compton
Terrace with their hit single “Down.” I heard, to my amazement, someone say, “*
Let’s mosh!” Sorry, kids, moshing is not for 311. If you wanted to mosh you’ Il have
to wait until Oct. 10th when Rage Against The Machine brings their rant, rave, and
political rhetoric to Phoenix.

In all, the show was worth my money. There were a lot of bands ata relatively low
price. Besides, i[...]’t you think?

was presented for Glendale Community Colleg[...]aturday, October 5.

The line up of music started with Pete Pearson and the Blues Sevilles. The sun beat[...]song.

“T realized just how brave I was when I got out there and started sweating.” quipped
Pearso[...]the musical genius that define ‘the blues’.

To add sugar to the spice of the afternoon, Patti Williams and Delirious played next.

Belting out classics like “Try A Little Tenderness” Williams had the older generation
swaying and reminiscing, while the youth kept time to the music with the snapping of fingers.
Miss Williams kept the mood light withthis afternoon?”

When asked how she liked singing a[...]se was positive.

“ Ididn’t think I was going to like it when I first saw it, but now that I'm up[...]nt levels in the grass because it allows
everyone a view.”

Set to the evening sky with stars all around, George Bowman and his band Spectrum
complimented the evening scene with their performance.

Bowman, had a deep silky voice that seemed to blend into the darkened sky, while the
thythm of his band seemed to keep the beat to the twinkling of the stars.

amphitheater.

The amphitheater, a work of art in itself, is made from simple cement, with designs carved
within and around the walls, formi[...], creating deliberately placed levels of seating. This was an ideal setting for kicking
back and relaxin[...]ful rhythm and blues that filled
the air.

with lecture from art lover

lecture series, with her speech “An American Canvas for the Arts.” She spoke at
the Tempe Mission Palms for this year’s lecture theme, “The Arts: Landscape of
our Time.”

“The arts provide a way to talk to and listen to each other,” Jennings-
Roggensack explained, She talked about her love for the arts of all kind and how
she has promoted it in her life. She is a dancer and choreographer, and currently

Congress on behalf of public funding for the arts[...]oggensack stated. She has helped communities talk to each other, and-was

Gregorio Chavez, who is unce[...]o the present day world. Chavez
goes back in time to experience how his ancestors lived and survived i[...]e took two semesters worth of sabbatical

As for the movie becoming a big screen motion picture, it has to be sent out to
different production companies in hopes that they will like the film’s Story line and want

college [but} have been relying on loans— about
$50,000—for graduate school,” said Derek R.
Larson, a doctoral student in history at Indiana
University.

His wife is also a graduate student, and they
wonder how they'll pay off the loans, he said.

Glendale Community College gotina brawl
with Scottsdale Community College (SCC)

their faces.

“Glendale is a solid team with some great
blockers,” SCC head coach Regina Man[...]t point against SCC in
the first game. as SCC had a lot of hitting and
serving errors in the early going.

Stacey Johnson was huge at the net with a
power block against the visitors.

With GCC leading 6-0, SCC had enough of
the Lady Gauchos easy scoring and called a
time-out. GCC coach Sheryl Nobley had a big
smile on her face as the team huddled around[...]against SCC.
Timeout was called once again by SCC with
the GCC lead at 9-0.

After the timeout, SCC made[...]y owned the backcourt and the
ball wasn’t going to land in her area.

Shawna Vanley spiked the ball with awe-
some strength during the game. On game
point, GCC had a long volley against SCC to

The second game saw GCC scoring first
against SCC. Just as GCC was about to score
again, SCC got the sideout.

SCC took the sideout to their advantage to
take the lead. The Scottsdale team was up 4-
1 when Nobley decided something was wrong
and called a timeout.

GCC needed to get reorganized to get back
in the game, but both teams fought for every
point with long volleys.

Finally, GCC pulled within a point with

over GCC with four players at 6 feet 4 inches

One of the few bright spots in the Gau-
chos loss to Arizona Western was forward
Drew Hervatin, who lead the Gaucho of-
fense with two goals despite playing with
acaston his pinky finger which he broke in
a game last week against Pima C.C.
Hervatin started the scoring in the first half
with a low header off a corner kick that
trickled through the goalkeeper’s legs in
the 26th minute to put GCC up, 1-0. Ari-
zona Westernanswered seven minutes later
on a rebound from a save by goalkeeper
Chris Barrier. The Gaucho defense seemed
to have the rebound covered, buta Western
was johnny-on-the-spot with the put back
to tie things up.

That was the way things ended at the
half, with the two teams knotted up at one
apiece. Play in t[...]lf was very slow-
developing and sloppy at times, with both
teams making a lot of mistakes on the
offensive end, Atothers, it was rough and
tumble with several fouls called.

As the second half began, both teams
picked up the pace. The Gauchos capital-
ized on a free kick from just inside the
penalty area. Drew Hervatin put back the
saved free kick from Fred Jungemann to
put GCC ahead at 2-1.

“The ball was just there,” said Hervatin.
“TI was just in the right spot to put it in.”

Western came back in the 72nd minute
with a big shot that beat goalie Mark
Prusinowski to the right post evened the
score at 2.

The rough and tumble play continued in
the half with more fouls being called on
both sides. The referee, trying to keep
control of the game, handed yellow cards
for various reasons to five players in the
second half. In the 79th minute, Western
scored again on a crossing pass to put
Arizona Western ahead for good. Western
followed that up with an insurance goal as
a forward cut through two Gaucho defend-
ers and scored.

For most of the second half, the Gauchos
seemed to be riddled with an offsides trap
utilized by Arizona Western. Western
would bring up their last defender to draw
one or more of the Glendale forwards

With the season heading into its seventh
week it seems[...]Community Col-
lege football Gauchos are on track to make a
push toward the playoffs with all phases of
their game, offense, defense, and s[...]n
57-24 on Oct. 5h.

Eastern Arizona will be next to visitGCC at
7 p.m., Saturday. Four of GCC’s fir[...]astern Arizona game is no different. One
positive to such tough competition is that it
will make GCC a better team come playoff
time.

“They're (Eastern Arizona) a real solid
team, and again we'll have our work cut out
for us,” Coach Joe Kersting said.

On Oct. 5 GCC made the long trip down to
Yuma to face Arizona Western who’ s ranking
was No. 11 nationally.

According to Kersting the defense stepped
it up when needed and limited Arizona West-
ern team to only 10 points before the starters
were pulled.

“We played the best defense of all year,”
Kersting[...]mmates.

“The defense played tremendous and was a
big factor,” Hinton said.

“That was the best game in the last three
years,” Kersting added.

With offensive and defensive domination,
GCC opened up a 57-10 lead midway threw
the third quarter. Anthon[...]r touch-
downs. Quarterback Nate Sanders was also a
big contributor to the offensive onslaught by
scoring three rushing touchdowns.

“It was a great team effort, and our offen-
sive line blew[...]Hinton

The win improved the Gauchos record to 4-
2 overall, 2-2 in league in play, and erased
m[...]e against Dixie
College the previous week.

Aid office strives to keep up with requests

While many students complain about the time it takes to
receive financial aid, Malone says that these students wait
until the last minute to fill out the forms.

“A community college setting is different than a
university's because many students who are attending a
community college decide to go to school at a later date,
and this is very frustrating because many people, a huge
amouni of people, wait until the last minute to turn in their
financial aid forms, and it is impossible to process all the
forms before the semester begins.”

“It is especially frus[...]because they should know better,” Malone said.

With new technological advances, processing financial[...]s out of the program,” Malone said.

“It's ke a funnel, only some can go through ata time,”
Malone said

“We are processing more applications than ever before.
Six years ago, we were processing about 3,000 applications,
and last year we processed 10,000 applications Already
this school year they have processed about 9,000
applications, with the school year only just beginning,”
Malone says.

“We know we're doing much better than we have in the
past,” Malone said.

The computer s[...]used in GCC’s financial
aid office was brought to them back in ’83, but the
financial aid office expects to get new software by
Christmas '97. However, a lot of work is done manually.

“One of the things I'd like to see happen is the routine
work being done on the computer, so the employees can
talk more to the students,” Malone said.

“If we had more people, we could do things faster. But
if we had enough employees for June and July, than we'd
have too many for the slow times, “ Malone sa[...]id employees
that handle all of the GCC students, with one vacancy.

A report is made every year about the amount of fraud in
the financial aid process. According to Malone, only 10

percent of students who receive[...]aying back
their loans.

“Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish between fraud and
ignorance. The question remains, how tight should we
make the rules?” Malone says. “More people make mistakes
out of ignorance than deceit.”

According to Malone, referrals of fraud are seldom
made, and with electronically processing the information,

“I don't think fraud is real[...]re
are some who do lie,” Malone said.

In order to receive a loan, students are now required to
go through a Loan Information Session before they receive
any money so they understand the res[...]eceiving and the
reality of how long it’s going to take to pay it off.

Default rates of loans are down considerably, from 21
percent in 1990, down to 10.3 percent this year, according
to Malone.

“People read more of what they sign,” said Malone.

Before receiving a loan, Malone says they are “going

the money and establish what the situation looks like in the
areas they are choosing to pursue.

“It's hard to think about how much it’s going to cost,”
Malone said. “I wish I could talk to them at the beginning.
But sometimes I don’t talk to the students until they are
greater than $40,000 in debt! It’s adifficult balance to treat
people like adults, because it is something new for a lot of
students, and they need to realize that we know more in the
area than they do.”

To receive financial aid, a student must complete a
Federal Student Aid application. They can return the form
three ways; by mailing it, which is the slowest process;
returning the form to the Financial Aid office for electronic
data entr[...]er. The Department of Education provides students
with that ability after requests have been made, which[...]ct Stafford Loan. Work-study is also available as a
type of financial aid.

Any student is eligible for financial aid who has: received
a high school diploma, a GED, or passed an ASSET test;
is a United States citizen; is a permanent resident of Ariz.;
has a valid social security number; has not defaulted on
previous loans; has a financial need; is enrolled in school:
and has a basic plan of what their future schooling will be.

The Depar[...]nd other information on the form,
and compares it with other databases, namely the Selective
Service dat[...]The FAA collect the Student
Data Form and verify a random 30 percent of the students.
They gather documents to make sure the student is correct
on all questions[...]cided whether
or not financial aid is needed, and a letter is sent out to the
student to tell them whether or not they are eligible to
receive financial aid.

26 a student left her book unattended
in a classroom and discovered the

reported an in-progress bike theft to
College Safety. Upon arrival the
